Ambassador Javier Ruperez

Background

Javier Ruperez, a retired Spanish diplomat, was Ambassador of Spain to the United States between 2000 and 2004 and UN Assistant Secretary General as Executive Director of the Security Council Counterterrorism Committee between 2004 and 2007. He was the Spanish Ambassador to the CSCE Madrid session (1980-1982) and to NATO (1982-1983). As a Member of the Spanish Parliament, he was Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees of the Chamber of Deputies between 1996 and 2000. He was as well President of the OSCE and NATO Parliamentary Assemblies. He has published several books on security and foreign affairs and remains and active contributor on these matters in the Spanish media. At present he lives in Washington, DC with his wife Rakela and daughter Laura. He is a non-resident Senior Adviser with CSIS and President of Ruperez International, LLC, a consulting firm.
