A Conversation with Erik Akerboom, Netherlands National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security


On Tuesday, November 22, 2011, HSPI hosted an Ambassadors Roundtable Series event featuring Erik Akerboom, the Netherlands’ National Coordinator for Counterterrorism & Security.

Mr. Akerboom discussed the recently published National Counterterrorism Strategy 2011-2015, which aims to reduce the risk and fear of terrorist attacks while limiting the possible damage following an attack. He specifically addressed Dutch experiences with countering radicalization and international efforts to counter violent extremism abroad.

About the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV)

"Approximately twenty agencies in the Netherlands are involved in combating terrorism. The National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) was appointed to improve cooperation between all these agencies. The NCTV is responsible for: Analysing intelligence and other information; Policy development; Coordinating anti-terrorist security measures.

Combining these tasks increases the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to combat terrorism.

The office of the NCTV and its staff fall under the responsibility of the Minister of Security and Justice, in a similar way to a directorate-general."

Speaker Biography

Erik Akerboom (b. 1961) began his career at the Police College in Apeldoorn, and went on to study political science at the VU University in Amsterdam. Until 1998 he held a number of posts within the police service: head of a community police team, district commander and head of the regional criminal investigation support service. He was then appointed director of the Democracy and Rule of Law Department of the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD). On 1 April 2009 he took over as National Coordinator for Counterterrorism (since 1 July 2011 National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security) from Tjibbe Joustra, who occupied the post from 1 April 2004 to January 2009.
