Dr. Daniel Kaniewski is Mission Area Director for Resilience and Emergency Preparedness/Response at the Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute (HSSAI), a federally funded research and development center serving the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In this role, he oversees the Institute’s emergency management, infrastructure protection, and cybersecurity studies.

Dr. Kaniewski is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where he teaches graduate courses in the Security Studies Program.

Prior to joining HSSAI, he was Assistant Vice President for Homeland Security and Deputy Director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) at George Washington University. There he contributed to debate on contemporary homeland security policy issues through task forces, publications, and media appearances.

He served as Special Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Senior Director for Response Policy in the George W. Bush Administration. When he joined the White House staff in July 2005 he soon witnessed the failed response to Hurricane Katrina. Following the disaster he served as a co-author and editor of the report The Federal Response to Hurricane Katrina: Lessons Learned. He then worked to improve the nation's response capabilities and advised the President and White House staff during domestic incidents (including man-made and natural disasters).

Prior to his White House service he co-founded HSPI. He has also held positions at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Congressional Fire Services Institute, and on Capitol Hill. He began his career in homeland security as a firefighter/paramedic.

Dr. Kaniewski is a member of the District of Columbia Homeland Security Commission, a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and an Advisory Board member of the Georgetown University Executive Master of Professional Studies in Emergency and Disaster Management.

Dr. Kaniewski holds a Bachelor of Science degree magna cum laude in Emergency Medical Services from The George Washington University, a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from The George Washington University.
